What is Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken?

Texas Roadhouse herb-crusted chicken is a popular dish served at Texas Roadhouse restaurants. It’s made with tender chicken breasts.

The chicken is coated with a flavorful herb crust. The crust includes herbs like thyme, rosemary, parsley, and oregano.

The seasoned chicken is then pan-seared and baked. The result is juicy chicken with a crispy and fragrant herb crust.

Texas Roadhouse herb crusted chicken is known for its delicious taste. It is often served with classic Southern-inspired sides.

Blend of herbs used to make Herb Crusted Chicken

The herb crust is made with a delightful eclectic array of herbs. It infuses the chicken with a robust flavor.

I used thyme, rosemary, sage, and parsley. Adding fresh herbs is recommended to bring out their rich flavor. I did use dried sage as I couldn’t find any fresh ones.

If you are opting for dried herbs instead, you would have to play around and experiment with the right amount for this recipe. You can also experiment with different herb combinations.

One of the key herbs that I used in the mixture is thyme. It adds an earthy and slightly minty taste.

Sage adds depth and complexity to the herb crust. It enhances the flavor profile of the chicken.

I also added rosemary. It adds a bold, pine-like aroma to the herb crust. Fresh parsley, on the other hand, provides a fresh and peppery taste.

This well-balanced combination of fresh herbs creates a flavorful herb-crusted chicken.

Ingredients and Alternatives

You’ll only need a handful of ingredients to create that irresistible flavor profile of Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken. Here are the ingredients needed :

Chicken breast – The star of the show. You can use fresh or frozen boneless chicken breasts.

If using frozen chicken, thaw it completely . Dry it using paper towels to remove any moisture before cooking.

Though this is inherently a chicken dish, you can make this healthy recipe, vegan.  Simply swap chicken for tofu or portobello mushrooms.

All-purpose flour – Chicken breast is coated with a thin layer of flour. This helps create a smooth surface for the herb mixture to stick to.

If you want your chicken to have a more crispy crust, use panko breadcrumb* mixture.  Gluten-free breadcrumbs* can also be used instead of all-purpose flour.

Herbs – Thyme, rosemary, sage, and parsley are used in this recipe. I used fresh herbs (except for sage) as I mentioned above.

If using dried herbs, the quantities needed for this recipe would vary.  You would have to do some trial and error to get the right ratios.

I do, however, recommend using fresh herbs if possible.

Olive oil* – It is used to coat the chicken breast and it helps the herb blend stick to the chicken. It also contributes a subtle richness and adds a pleasant depth of flavor.

I used extra virgin olive oil but any other oil should also work.

Lemon juice –  I like a little acidity in my herb crusted chicken. The addition of lemon juice brings a bright and tangy note to the dish.

Others – garlic powder, salt, black pepper, paprika (or chili powder)

Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken Recipe

To create the mouthwatering Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken copycat recipe, follow these simple steps:

Prepare flour mixture

In a bowl* or shallow dish, combine flour, garlic powder, kosher salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix them well so all the seasonings are evenly distributed.

flour and spices in a glass bowl

Coat chicken breast

Pat the chicken breasts dry. There must be no moisture on the chicken breast before adding the flour mixture to it.

Coat the chicken breast with extra virgin olive oil, about a tablespoon of oil should be enough. Then add the chicken breasts to the flour mix, one at a time.

Evenly coat the mix onto the chicken, making sure every surface is coated.

2 chicken breasts coated with flour and spices mixture

Sear the chicken

Heat olive oil in a nonstick skillet* or cast iron pan* on medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place chicken breasts, two at a time, on the pan.

Cook each side for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. The aim is to sear the chicken to get a crispy texture outside.

Switch off the heat and add sage, parsley, thyme, and rosemary on top of the chicken breasts.

2 seared chicken breast pieces on a cast iron pan
2 chicken breast on an iron skillet with fresh and dry herbs on them

Bake the chicken

Preheat your oven to 425F. Place the pan with the chicken, in the preheated oven.

Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked. This also cooks the herbs and combines them with the crust to get that perfect texture and taste.

If using a skillet instead of a cast iron pan, make sure they are oven friendly. If not, simply move the chicken breast from the skillet to a baking sheet* or baking dish and bake the chicken.

Serve

Once cooked, remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute and keeps the chicken moist.

Serve the Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken hot.

Texas Roadhouse serves their dish with half of a caramelized lemon to squeeze on top of the chicken.

Tips to Make the Best Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken

To make the best Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken, here are some valuable tips to keep in mind:

  • Make sure the chicken breast is completely dry before coating it with a flour mixture.
  • You can use any blend of herbs that you like in place of the ones listed in the recipe.
  • I highly recommend using fresh herbs to make this great recipe even better! This will create a more flavorful dish.
  • Adjust the quantities of herbs according to personal preference. If you prefer stronger flavors, you can increase the amount of herbs used.
  • Properly seasoning the chicken breasts with salt and pepper before applying the herb crust is crucial. Season both sides generously to enhance the overall taste of the dish.
  • Don’t overcrowd your skillet when you’re cooking the chicken. I recommend cooking two chicken breasts at a time. This will ensure that it cooks evenly.
  • Make sure the skillet used to sear the chicken is oven friendly before putting it in the oven!
  • Let the crispy fried chicken rest for a few minutes after cooking. This allows the juices to redistribute and prevents the chicken from being dry.

How to Tell if Chicken is Done

Chicken breasts are cooked when the internal temperature is 74ºC/165ºF. If you don’t have a meat thermometer*, visually check the chicken for doneness.

Slice into the thickest part of the chicken breast. If the meat is opaque and white throughout, the breasts are cooked.

If the inside is reddish-pink or has pink hues in the white, it needs to be cooked for some more time.

This is a great way to check if the chicken is cooked. Make sure to never eat undercooked chicken as it can cause food poisoning.

Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken Recipe Variations

Here are a few recipe variations you can explore. This adds a twist to your Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken:

  • Spicy Herb-Crusted Chicken: For those who enjoy a little heat, add some crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to the herb mixture. This will give the tender chicken breast a spicy kick. It also creates a flavorful combination of herbs and heat.
  • Parmesan Herb Crusted Chicken: Enhance the crust by mixing grated Parmesan cheese with the dried herbs. The cheese adds a savory and slightly nutty taste.
  • Herb-Crusted Chicken Tenders: Instead of using whole chicken breasts, slice the chicken into tenders or strips. Coat them with the herb mixture and cook until crispy and golden. This variation is a great option to serve as appetizers, or finger food.

Alternative Ways to Cook Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken

If you’re looking for alternative ways to cook Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken, here are three options to consider:

Air Fryer Method

  • Preheat your air fryer* to 370°F.
  • Prepare the flour mixture as mentioned above. Add herbs to this mixture.
  • Coat the chicken breasts in the flour mixture with the herbs.
  • Spray or brush the air fryer basket with oil. Here is a list of cooking oil you can use for an air fryer.
  • Place the chicken breasts in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded.
  • Cook for approximately 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Check the internal temperature after this, and make sure it’s at least 165 degrees F.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy your flavorful and air-fried herb-crusted chicken.

Grilling Method

  • Preheat your grill* to medium-high heat.
  • Oil the grill grates to prevent sticking.
  • Instead of coating the chicken in flour, cover the chicken breasts with a marinade made with your favorite herbs.
  • Marinate for 1-2h in the refrigerator.
  • Place the chicken directly on the grill grates.
  • Grill for about 6-8 minutes per side or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). You will get a browned and crispy crust,
  • Remove from the grill. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving the grilled herb-crusted chicken.

Broiling Method

  • Preheat the broiler on high heat.
  • Prepare the flour mixture as mentioned above. Add herbs to this mixture.
  • Coat the chicken breasts in the flour mixture with the herbs
  • Place the chicken on a broiler pan or a baking sheet* lined with foil.
  • Position the oven rack about 6 inches (15 cm) away from the broiler element.
  • Broil the chicken for about 4-5 minutes per side or until the crust is golden brown and crispy. Chicken is cooked when the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Keep a close eye on the chicken as broiling can cause it to cook quickly.
  • Once done, remove it from the oven. Allow it to rest briefly, and serve the flavorful herb-crusted chicken.

These alternative cooking methods provide different textures and flavors while maintaining the delicious herb crust.

Always ensure the chicken reaches the recommended internal temperature for safe consumption.

Storing Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken

This delicious recipe is great for meal prep. To properly store Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken, follow these guidelines to maintain its quality and freshness:

Refrigeration: If you have leftovers or want to store the cooked herb-crusted chicken for later use, allow it to cool completely at room temperature.

Place the chicken in an airtight container or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

Freezing: If you want to store the herb-crusted chicken for an extended period, freezing is an option.

Keep in mind that freezing may affect the texture and crispiness of the crust. Here’s how to do it:

  • Allow the cooked chicken to cool completely.
  • Wrap each chicken breast individually with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
  • Place the wrapped chicken breasts in a freezer-safe bag or container.
  • Label the container with the date and store it in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.

Always use your judgment. Discard any leftovers that show signs of spoilage, such as an off odor, unusual texture, or discoloration.

Reheating Texas roadhouse’s herb crusted chicken

This herb chicken reheats well. When ready to enjoy the stored herb-crusted chicken, make sure to reheat it properly to maintain its flavor and texture.

Here are a few methods to reheat:

Stove:

The best way to reheat is on the stove. Heat olive oil in a pan* at medium heat.

Add in the chicken pieces to be reheated once the oil is hot. Heat each side for 2-3 minutes.

This method heats the chicken well and also keeps the outer crust nice and crispy.

Oven :

Preheat the oven to 400°F and reheat for 12 to 15 minutes. Cooking time would depend on the thickness of your chicken.

This method works best if you keep the leftover chicken breasts out of the refrigerator for 20-30 min before reheating.

Air fryer :

Preheat the air fryer* to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the chicken breasts in the basket and reheat for 5-7 minutes.

You can also lightly coat the chicken using an olive oil spray* to keep the crust crispy.

Microwave :

Place the chicken on a microwave-safe plate. Cover it with a damp paper towel.

Heat in short intervals, checking and flipping the chicken occasionally until heated through.

Keep in mind that the texture of the herb crust may not be as crispy after storage and reheating. However, the flavors will still be delicious.

Make Ahead Options

There are a few make-ahead options for Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken.

Mix the dried herbs together. Store the herb mixture in an airtight container or sealable bag ahead of time.

This way, when you’re ready to cook the chicken, you can simply coat the chicken breasts with the pre-made herb crust.

You can also partially cook the chicken by searing, as mentioned in the recipe. Then allow them to cool to room temperature and store them in the refrigerator.

When you’re ready to serve, apply the herb crust. Finish cooking until the chicken reaches the recommended internal temperature.

Remember, if you choose to partially cook the chicken in advance, it’s essential to handle and store it safely to prevent any food safety concerns. Always refrigerate raw chicken promptly and follow proper hygiene practices.

What to Serve with Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken

When serving Texas Roadhouse Herb Crusted Chicken as the main course, there are several delicious options to consider as side dishes.

I like to serve this herb-crusted chicken with a side of roasted veggies. Serve with a side of green beans, broccoli, or asparagus for a low-carb, healthy dinner.

Roasting vegetables brings out their natural sweetness. It adds a delightful contrast to the herb-crusted chicken.

Another delicious option is mashed potatoes. This classic choice pairs well with the savory flavor and herb crust of the chicken. You can opt for traditional mashed potatoes or try variations like garlic mashed potatoes.

For extra flavor add toppings like cheddar cheese, bacon, and green onions.

For a Southern-inspired side, Cajun Fried Corn is an excellent choice. Herb coated chicken will also go well with a side of ricefresh-baked bread, or even a simple garden salad.
