What is Smothering Technique in Cooking?

Smothering is a popular cooking method used in Southern and Creole cooking. It involves simmering meat or vegetables in a delicious sauce. It is usually covered with a lid to seal in the steam and moisture.

This allows the meat or veggies to absorb the flavorful sauce. The resulting in a dish is both tender and succulent in texture.

In this recipe, the smothering technique combines sautéed onions and mushrooms with the chicken to create a delicious flavor blend. The onions and mushrooms act as a smothering “sauce”. They add moisture, richness, and a delightful depth to the chicken.

The melted cheese on top provides a creamy and indulgent element that ties everything together.

This technique transforms a simple chicken dish into a hearty and satisfying meal. It truly captures the essence of Texas Roadhouse’s smothered chicken.

Ingredients for Easy Smothered Chicken Recipe

The following ingredients work together to create the signature flavors and textures of Texas Roadhouse Smothered Chicken. A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Chicken: It is a good source of protein. It is the main ingredient in the dish. I use skinless boneless chicken breasts to ensure even cooking

Seasoning: I used Salt, pepper, onion powder, and smoked paprika. The blend of spices is used to add savory and smoky flavors to the chicken breast, enhancing its taste. Feel free to customize and add your favorite seasonings

Low sodium soy sauce*: Adds a savory and umami flavor to the chicken while also helping to tenderize it.

Lemon juice: Provides a tangy and citrusy element to the marinade.

Worcestershire sauce*: Adds depth of flavor with its savory and slightly tangy characteristics.

Minced garlic: Infuses the chicken with a strong and aromatic garlic flavor. I use a garlic press* to mince the garlic. Use garlic powder if fresh garlic is not available.

Onions and mushrooms: Add a satisfying texture to the dish. The cooked onions provide a sweet and savory taste. The mushrooms provide an earthy flavor.

Sliced Jack cheese: Melted and placed on top of the cooked chicken. It smothers the chicken breast and helps hold the mushrooms and onion added on top of the chicken. You can replace jack cheese with cheddar or parmesan cheese. This might change the flavor profile of the dish,

Others: Olive oil, butter

Then make the Marinade. Combine low-sodium soy sauce, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, and minced garlic in a small bowl. This will help tenderize the chicken and infuse it with delicious flavors.

Pour the marinade over the chicken. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for a couple of hours or until it’s ready to be cooked.

Sauté the Onions and Mushrooms

Heat a griddle* or skillet* over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter. Cook the sliced onions in the butter.

Once the onions have become translucent, add the sliced mushrooms. Season them with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Then add another tablespoon of butter. Stir the mixture together, cover it, and reduce the heat.

This step brings out the sweet and savory flavors of the onions. It also adds an earthy taste to the dish with the mushrooms.

Cook the Marinated Chicken

In the same pan, melt the remaining two tablespoons of butter.

Place the marinated chicken on the griddle or pan on medium heat. Cook each side for about 2-3 minutes or until it turns golden brown.

Tips to Make Smothered Chicken Texas Roadhouse

  • I recommend pounding the chicken breast with a mallet* to even out the thickness if you are not slicing the chicken breast. This ensures uniform cooking.
  • Don’t be shy with the seasonings. Make sure to season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and other spices. This enhances the flavors and create a well-balanced dish.
  • Take the time to properly sauté the onions and mushrooms before adding them to the dish. This step helps to bring out their flavors and ensures they are cooked to perfection.
  • Cover the pan while cooking. This helps to trap steam and moisture, creating a moist and tender chicken breast.

Variations of Smothered Chicken Texas Roadhouse Recipe

Looking to add a twist to the classic Texas Roadhouse Smothered Chicken recipe? Here are a few variations you can try:

  • Protein alternatives: Try swapping chicken with pork chop, beef. Use Plant-based alternatives like tofu, tempeh, or seitan for a vegetarian/vegan twist.

  • Cheesy Delight: Try using a blend of different cheeses. Experiment with cheddar, mozzarella, or even a smoky gouda for a more diverse and indulgent cheese topping.

Storing Texas Roadhouse Smothered Chicken

Refrigerate

Allow this homemade Texas Roadhouse chicken to cool down completely. Make sure to refrigerator within 2h of cooking. Stored correctly, Smothered Chicken can last 3-4 days in the refrigerator.

This creamy chicken recipe also freezes very well. I suggest dividing the chicken into individual or family-size portions. This allows for easy thaw and reheating.

Freeze

Place the chicken in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag. Make sure to remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.

Smothered chicken can be frozen for up to 2-3 months. However, it would taste best within 1-2 months of freezing.

Reheat

Thaw the chicken overnight in the refrigerator. This helps preserve the texture and flavor of the dish.

Once thawed, reheat it over low heat on the stove until heated through.

You can also microwave it for 2-3 minutes to heat the dish. Ensure it reaches 165°F (74°C). If needed, continue heating in 30-second intervals until the desired temperature is reached.

What to Serve With Homemade Texas Roadhouse Chicken Recipe?

There are several delicious options for sides for smothered chicken from Texas Roadhouse. You can serve the smothered chicken over a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. The smooth and velvety texture of the potatoes pairs well with the smothered chicken.

I also like to serve it with a side of steamed vegetables such as green beans or broccoli. The veggies add a satisfying crunch and a delightful contrast to the richness of the chicken.

If you are not a fan of steamed veggies, try it with a side of this delicious Cajun Fried Corn.

If you prefer to smother your chicken in gravy instead of melted cheese, add a side of good bread to soak up the creamy sauce! For a truly Southern experience, swap the bread for cornbread instead.
