Potatoes are undoubtedly the most versatile vegetable. We have mashed, boiled, fried, and even frittered potatoes!
Some of the tastiest dishes around the globe are prepared using potatoes and the “Hash browns” are definitely one of them.
This ideal breakfast side dish is vegan as well as gluten-free, and a true family favorite! Pair them with fluffy pancakes or as sides to sausages for an ultimate weekend brunch!
What is an Air Fryer?
An air fryer is essentially a small countertop convection oven that uses hot air as a medium for heat.
The dry circulating heat cooks all surfaces of the food allowing food such as hash browns to keep its crispiness while maintaining flavor.
Air Fryer Hash Browns
Hash Browns are a popular American breakfast side dish made with potatoes that are diced, shredded, julienned, or riced. They are seasoned and fried till they get that lovely golden brown color.
If you are wondering why should you make these hash browns in the air fryer., read on –
- It takes a lot less time to cook hash browns in the air fryer and get that crispy exterior.
- It’s less messy and very simple to clean post-cooking. The potato patties don’t stick to the air fryer trays. You’ll never want to cook hash browns any other way again.
- The best part about this appliance is that you can cook your food with very little oil or no oil at all.
They make it easy to whip up frozen foods like french fries, chicken wings, fritters, etc. in a way that is healthier than deep-frying. It is a great and healthy alternative for the folks who are counting their calories!
Can I stack hash brown patties in the Air fryer
I do not recommend stacking frozen patties in the air fryer if you prefer crispy patties.
If stacked, they might not cook evenly and will not be crunchy. So add the individual patties in a single layer.
Some foods such as french fries, roasted carrots, etc can be stacked. A general rule of thumb is if the basket is shaken to rotate the food instead of flipping them with a spatula, the food can be stacked,
Ingredients and Alternatives
Frozen Hash Brown patties – I used frozen hash brown patties which you can find in the freezer section of your grocery store,
Salt – For great flavor. You can also add black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, or Italian seasoning to add a little flavor to the hash browns
How to Make the Best Crispy Air Fryer Hash Browns
Add frozen hash browns to your air fryer basket.
Cook time – 400°F for 8 minutes, flip it halfway through using tongs and cook for another 8 min
Remove, season with salt, garlic powder, and serve immediately.
Add extra time if you want them crispier. This method is pretty much foolproof. All air fryers cook slightly differently so keep an eye on them towards the end so your hashbrowns don’t get burnt.
What to serve with Air Fryer hash browns
Undoubtedly, hash browns are like a blank canvas and they can elevate the simplest dishes.
You can serve these homemade hash browns with fried, poached, and even scrambled eggs. They pair up to make the quintessential American breakfast.
But if you are like me and are either vegan or allergic to eggs., pair them up with sausages (choose poultry or vegan sausage for a healthier option). They also go well with a side of pancake stack or even a smoothie bowl.
Hash browns can be had as it is or you can top them with some chili. Ketchup also goes well with hash browns., so does hot sauce or your favorite sauces or dip!
Possible variations of Air Fryer Hash Browns
The air fryer frozen hash browns can be made spicy by adding 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper or chili powder or chili flakes. If you prefer smoky hash browns add 1/2 tsp of smoked paprika instead. You could also add any of your favorite seasoning blend to it.
You can also make hash brown casseroles or hash brown soup or serve them like loaded fries by adding melted cheese and bacon bits on top.
Another option is to add hash browns to a breakfast sandwich for an all-in-one breakfast with a delicious crunch. You can check out more breakfast recipes here.
Storing and freezing hash browns
Store the leftover hash browns in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Simply preheat in an air fryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for a couple of minutes before reheating.
I wouldn’t recommend refreezing the cooked hash browns.
