  • This recipe requires only a few simple ingredients, most of which you might already have at home.
  • This copycat version comes together in less than 5 minutes.

What is Subway Chipotle Sauce or Southwest sauce?

Subway is a fast-food restaurant chain known for using fresh ingredients in its sandwiches and salads. The southwest chipotle sauce is one of their signature sauces. It is zesty and flavorful, with a kick of spice from chipotle peppers!

What is Chipotle Pepper in Adobo Sauce?

Chipotle pepper in adobo sauce is one of the key ingredients of this recipe.

Chipotle peppers come from red jalapenos, and sometimes also from ripe green jalapenos. They are made by putting the jalapenos through a drying and smoking process, during which most of the heat is still retained.

These chipotle chilies have a fruity, smoky flavor and have medium heat. And the adobo sauce is a savory concoction made with onion, tomato, vinegar, and spices.

The chipotle peppers are combined with adobo sauce to create this flavorful and smooth sauce. It is tangy with a little sweetness.

You can find this sauce at almost every grocery store or even on Amazon*.

Subway Chipotle Sauce Ingredients and Alternatives

Check the recipe card below for the full ingredients list and quantities.

Ranch – It gives a zesty flavor to this recipe. I used my eggless ranch recipe but you can use your favorite store-bought one as well. If you are looking to buy an eggless ranch – Wish-Bone Ranch* is a good option.

Mayo – It’s the base of this sauce and adds creaminess. I used full-fat vegan mayo*.

If you are not a vegan or allergic to eggs like me, feel free to use regular mayo. I still recommend using full-fat mayo for the best flavor and taste.

Low-fat mayo can be used to make this recipe healthier. All or part of the mayo can also be replaced with plain Greek yogurt or sour cream for an even healthier option.

Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce *- They add the southwest flavors! Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce are usually available in cans in the international aisle of most grocery stores or you can buy them from Amazon. They are typically sold in 7 oz cans so you will only need half of the can.

If you aren’t able to find it you can try using chipotle paste* or chipotle powder* instead. Though these don’t provide the same intensity of flavors as the chipotle peppers in adobo sauce.

White Sugar – I use sugar to add a touch of sweetness to the southwest sauce. It cuts through the spiciness of the chipotle peppers. It can be replaced with brown sugar, honey* or maple syrup*.

Onion Powder and Garlic Powder – These are flavor enhancers.

White vinegar* – It balances the flavors by adding a hint of acidity. You can also use fresh lime juice or apple cider vinegar instead.

Salt – Add to taste. You can use table salt or kosher salt or sea salt.

How to Make Subway Chipotle Sauce

Follow the step-by-step chipotle southwest sauce recipe to make this delicious sauce. It is only going to take a few minutes to create your new favorite sauce!

1. Combine mayonnaise and ranch with chipotle peppers in a food processor*.

2. To this, add white vinegar, sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, salt

3. Blend till you get a smooth consistency.

NOTE: You could also add these pantry ingredients in a bowl and blend using an immersion blender* if you don’t have a food processor.

4. For best results, let it sit in the fridge for at least an hour before serving. This allows the flavors of the southwestern chipotle sauce to come together

  • This sauce thickens in the fridge as it sits. Add a tablespoon of water or milk to reach the desired consistency.
  • Freezing is not recommended as the mayonnaise can separate when thawed.
  • I recommend letting the sauce sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour to let the flavors come together.
  • Make sure you check that your onion and garlic powder are fresh. If they have been open for longer than 6 months then they won’t have as much flavor.
  • Use a good food processor for the best consistency.

Storing South Chipotle Sauce

Store this perfect sauce in a mason jar* or any other airtight container. For a full Subway restaurant experience, store it in a squeeze bottle*.

You can keep this chipotle subway sauce refrigerated for 4-7 days. Give it a good stir to redistribute the flavors before using. I don’t recommend freezing this homemade sauce as the mayonnaise can separate when thawed and may not come back together.

What to Serve with Subway Sauce

This is a versatile sauce and it can be served in various ways!

Spread this Subway sauce on your homemade subway sandwich to elevate any sandwich taste. You can also add it to your juicy burger or wrap.

This also works as a delicious dip. You can serve a small bowl of this subway sauce to dip raw vegetables, onion rings, french fries, and chicken wings!
You can also drizzle this sauce over tacos, or quesadillas.

Another great way to serve southwest sauce is as a salad dressing! Simply whisk in some additional water to thin it out to your desired consistency.

Recipe Variations

  • Spicier: Add more chipotle peppers for a spicier southwest chipotle sauce. You could also add a little bit of black pepper to up the heat!
  • Less Spicy: Reduce the amount of adobo sauce to make it less spicy. You could also add 1/4 cup extra mayo.
  • For some extra flavor, add dried herbs such as parsley or basil.

Other Subway Sauces

Some of the other popular and fan-favorite Subway sauces are :

Baja Chipotle Sauce

Baja Chipotle subway sauce is one of the newer sauce options on the Subway menu. It is deep, smoky, and spicy with a distinct southwest flair.

The Baja chipotle sauce blends tangy, spicy, and smoky tastes into one delightful combination. Subway Baja chipotle sauce ingredients include chipotle and guajillo peppers and spices like cumin, oregano, garlic, smoked paprika, onion, and lime.

It’s basically a chipotle ranch sauce and replaces their Chipotle Southwest sauce.

BBQ Sauce

Subway’s BBQ sauce is tangy and sweet sauce. It is a great option for chicken or pork sandwiches.

The sauce is made with a blend of spices, sugar, and vinegar. The vinegar adds a touch of acidity, while the sugar gives it a sweetness. The smoky flavor comes from the BBQ spice blend.

Sweet Onion Sauce

The sweet onion sauce is ideal for those who are looking for a low-calorie option. It is made with onions, sugar, and vinegar.

The sweetness of the onions makes this sauce perfect for those who enjoy a little sweetness in their sandwich. This mildly sweet sauce is a perfect complement to turkey and ham sandwiches.

Honey Mustard Sauce

This is another sauce that is perfect for those who like a little bit of sweetness in their sandwich. This creamy sauce complements your sub, wrap, salad, or bowl with a sweeter taste.

Made with mustard, honey, sugar, vinegar, water, and other ingredients, Subway’s Honey Mustard sauce has 40 calories per serving. Another bonus to choosing this sauce, besides the added sweet taste, is that it’s fat-free.

Creamy Siracha

Spice lovers will enjoy creamy sriracha. Although slightly sweeter tasting than typical sriracha sauce, it still brings on the heat.

Even though it is one of the best Subway sauces, do not add it to your entrée if you don’t enjoy a spicy meal. It is also one of the lower-calorie sauce options at Subway, with only 80 calories per serving.
